School meals every school day

A school lunch has to be served every day, all term. Therefore, school meals is a natural fit for monthly giving. In our current budget, $75 feeds one child for a whole term, so $50 a month feeds more than two children for a full school year.

Orphan care and monthly food packages

Our orphan care cause delivers a food package to each household every month, and a caseworker visits monthly. Consequently, a monthly gift matches the rhythm of the work exactly. In our current budget, $70 provides two months of food for one child living with a relative.

Rural clinics that pay nurses every month

A clinic can only stay open if its staff are paid. Through medical clinics, $300 pays a month's salary for a community nurse. Similarly, $50 buys essential medicines for 25 patient visits. Therefore, a group of monthly donors can keep a nurse on duty all year.

Emergency food aid through the hungry season

The hungry season lasts months, not days. Our emergency food aid cause delivers monthly rations or cash transfers until the next harvest. For instance, $90 provides two months of food parcels for a family of five.

Child sponsorship

Child sponsorship gives a child a year of steady support, including schooling, health checks and nutrition. In our current budget, a full year costs $468, so a monthly gift of $50 covers it with some left over.

School fees and boarding costs fall due every term. Consequently, monthly giving to scholarships helps students stay in school without interruption. A full year of secondary school costs about $1,100.

What $50 a month provides

For example, $600 a year could provide more than 17 months of food for a child in orphan care. Alternatively, it could fund two nurses' salaries for a month through medical clinics. Similarly, it could provide 60 treated bed nets through malaria prevention.

Therefore, even the minimum monthly gift adds up to something substantial over a year, and over five years it becomes $3,000 of steady support for the same community. Moreover, if your employer matches it, the impact doubles.

How to set up monthly giving to Africa

Setting up a monthly gift takes just a few minutes online.

1. Choose a cause. Open the donation page and choose the cause you want to support.
2. Select "Monthly". Under "How often", choose Monthly.
3. Choose an amount. Pick an amount from $50, in dollars, pounds, euros, Canadian or Australian dollars.
4. Pay by card. Monthly gifts are made by card, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.
5. Receive your receipt. You receive an email receipt for each monthly payment.

Your gift is then charged on the same day each month until you change or cancel it.

Changing or cancelling a monthly gift

You are always in control. To cancel, simply email info@givetoafrica.net with the email address you gave with. We cancel it the same working day, and no further payments are taken, as our terms explain.

Similarly, if you want to change the amount or the cause, email us and we will help. Alternatively, you can cancel and set up a new monthly gift on the donation page.

In addition, if your card expires or is replaced, a payment may fail. If that happens, email us and we will help you set the gift up again with your new card.

Monthly giving and taxes

For US donors, monthly gifts to a 501(c)(3) are generally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You receive a receipt for each payment, so keep them together for tax time.

From 2026, taxpayers who don't itemize can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts ($2,000 for married couples filing jointly) to qualifying charities (TurboTax). Consequently, a single filer giving $50 to $80 a month stays within the $1,000 limit, while married couples filing jointly can give up to about $165 a month. Meanwhile, itemizers now deduct gifts above 0.5% of their adjusted gross income. As always, check with your tax adviser.

Monthly giving versus one large gift

Both have their place. A large one-off gift can fund a complete project, such as a borehole or a classroom. On the other hand, monthly giving funds the running costs that keep projects working, such as meals, medicines and salaries.

Therefore, many donors do both. For example, some give monthly to school meals and make a larger annual gift to school construction. Others give monthly and add a year-end gift from a donor-advised fund.

Monthly giving as a family, church or team

A year of monthly giving: what you'll see

When you start monthly giving to Africa, results arrive in steps. Here is what a typical first year looks like.

Your first month

First, your receipt arrives by email as soon as the first payment clears. Your gift is recorded against the cause you chose, and it joins other monthly gifts in the next stage of the partner's budget.

Your first quarter

Next, you receive your first quarterly field report. It shows what the cause delivered in that quarter, such as meals served, nurses paid or families supported, and what it cost.

Your first year

By the end of the year, you have four field reports. Together, they show how the programme progressed against the targets on the cause page. For example, school meals reports meal counts, attendance and growth checks each term. As a result, you can see the difference steady support makes over time.

Monthly giving from outside the United States

Supporters in the UK, Canada, Europe and Australia can also give monthly. On the donation page, choose your currency, then select Monthly. The minimum is about £40, €47, A$76 or C$69 a month, equal to $50.

Please note that US tax deductions apply to US taxpayers. Elsewhere, deductibility depends on your own country's rules. Nevertheless, your gift is recorded and reported in exactly the same way.
